Silicosis is associated with the exposure of respirable crystalline silica (RCS) dust which is abundantly found in many industries from around the world. The quartz element of RCS is found in variety of substances such as concrete, masonry, abrasive materials, rock to name but a few. The industries where this is more common tend to be mines, quarries, tunnelling, construction, foundries and glass manufacture. Silica is found as a large component of the above materials and is readily released when cutting, grinding breaking where friable fibres are released in the form of very fine inhalable dust. RCS dust is a known human carcinogen i.e. known to cause human forms of cancer.
